The FLOURISH Journey: Turning very obstacle into a steppingstone

Every leader I coach eventually hits the same wall: a moment when the mission feels foggy, the comparisons feel loud, or the team feels stuck. In those moments, it's tempting to treat the obstacle as proof that something is wrong with you.

I see it differently. I see it as terrain.

FLOURISH is the journey — eight steps that map how you can grow into your fullest capacity. But no journey is a straight line, and this one is no exception. Along the way, you'll hit real challenges: self-doubt, comparison, conflict, overwhelm. That's not a detour from the path — it's the path. What determines whether a challenge becomes a setback or a steppingstone isn't the challenge itself. It's which voice you listen to when it shows up.

Two Voices, One Choice

Inside every leader, two voices compete for the microphone.

The Saboteur is the voice of self-doubt,  the one that whispers "you're not cut out for this," "you're falling behind," "why can't your team just get it together?" It's loud, familiar, and almost always wrong about what it's actually protecting you from.

The Sage is the wiser voice — the one that meets a challenge with curiosity instead of panic. The Sage has five Sage Powers: Explore, Navigate, Empathize, Innovate, and Activate. Think of them as a compass, a map, a translator, a workshop, and a pair of boots, everything you need to keep walking steadily once the trail gets rocky.

The work of leadership isn't silencing the Saboteur forever. It's noticing when it has the mic, and handing it back to the Sage, again and again, until your Sage becomes your default.

The FLOURISH Journey: Step by Step

Person jumping between red rocks in a desert landscape.

F — Feel secure in values and mission

The Saboteur says: "Why am I even doing this?" The Sage responds: Explore ("What drew me to this work originally?") and Navigate ("What values feel most true right now?") The steppingstone: Renewed clarity about why you're here.

L — Lean into your natural strengths

The Saboteur says: "I have all this technical expertise, what happened to me?" The Sage responds: Empathize with yourself, and with the reality that everyone's path looks different. The steppingstone: Self-acceptance.

O — Overcome the inner critic

The Saboteur says: "Am I even good enough for this?" The Sage responds: Explore ("What is this voice really trying to protect me from?") The steppingstone: Self-awareness.

U — Uncover your authentic approach

The Saboteur says: "Why aren't I doing as well as other leaders in my field?" The Sage responds: Innovate ("What would actually feel natural for me here?") The steppingstone: Self-acceptance, rooted in your own method, not someone else's.

R — Recognize your relationship-building superpower

The Saboteur says: "Why can't my team just get along?" The Sage responds: Empathize ("How does this look from their side of the table?") The steppingstone: Deeper connection.

I — Integrate fundraising with leadership

The Saboteur says: "Why do our departments feel like they're operating in silos?" The Sage responds: Navigate ("What matters most for the long run?") paired with Innovate. The steppingstone: Authentic integration.

S — Strengthen team confidence

The Saboteur says: "Why do we keep losing our best people?" The Sage responds: Activate supportive, concrete action while staying rooted in Empathy. The steppingstone: Collective growth.

H — Hold space for growth

The Saboteur says: "Is this really how nonprofit work is supposed to feel?" The Sage responds: Navigate ("What's the next right step, not the next ten?") The steppingstone: Sustainable progress.

The Gift Underneath It All

Every challenge that first triggers a Saboteur response is really an invitation your chance to practice Sage leadership in real time. And you don't practice it alone. Your team is watching. Every time you meet an obstacle with curiosity instead of criticism, you're not just navigating your own path, you're modeling, in real time, how obstacles become wisdom. That's the real journey. Not the absence of challenge, but the steady, practiced choice of which voice gets to lead you through it.
